Carsplain First Look – Maserati MC20

We were fortunate to be granted an early first look at the all-new Maserati MC20 here in Washington D.C. with other members of the Washington Automotive Press Association.

People here are EXCITED! This is the MC 20 (MC stands for Maserati Corse – Corse is Italian for Racing) and the 20 is meant to commemorate the year 2020, which, while many people will want to forget 2020, is the year this car debuted. However, production won’t start until the end of the year, and deliveries would thus start next year.

Maserati believes that this MC20 is the start of a new chapter in their long and storied history. One that is no longer limited by former Fiat Chrysler cousin group Ferrari.

While Maserati’s previous supercar, the MC12 (which stood for Maserati Corse 12 Cylinder) was an ultra limited production model (just 50 units and originally priced near $1.5 Million), the MC20 should be much more of a “supercar for the masses” or… elite masses rather. Pricing is estimated around $200,000 – in line with the McLarens, Lamborghinis, Ferraris of the world.

The MC20 is a Mid Engine vehicle, so the engine sits just behind the 2 passenger cabin. That engine is a new “Nettuno” keeping their sea themes intact. This is their first bespoke engine in 20+ years and what an engine it is. Not a V8, but this 3.0L twin-turbo V6 will fork out over 620 Horsepower and over 530 lb-ft of torque which will all be channeled to the rear wheels through an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. 6-piston Brembo Brakes up front will help calm the tides when needed.

This setup is expected to catapult the MC20 to 60 miles per hour in under 3 seconds and help this lightweight carbon fiber intensive sports car to a top speed of over 200 miles per hour. All solid credentials for the intended competitive set and don’t forget the butterfly doors just in case people think this is some run of the mill mildly-super car.

Inside, is a fairly stark and minimalistic cabin, but premium in touch and feel. It’s not a completely analog throwback either, there’s a fully digital instrument cluster as well as infotainment display and even a wireless charger for your phone and connected vehicle services.

No cheap plastics to be found in the MC 20’s interior

The MC20 will eventually be offered in convertible form, as well as electrified versions, while a race version will be thrown into the motorsports world.
